Moses had quite a temper. First he broke the first stones of the 10 commandments. Had to go back and get another set. Then the poor soul had to follow that bunch of cry babies and disobedient spoiled children of God through a long trip that lasted 40 yrs. Must have been exhausting to say the least. So here poor Moses is looking happy at the promised land, probably saying, "thank God!" we have finally made it after 40 yrs of wondering through the wilderness. I'm sure that bunch were still griping and thirsty. God told Moses to tap the rock. Moses hauled off and smote the rock, and for his punishment he was not allowed to go the promised land. He died on the mountain and the bunch of cry babies, who must have tormented Him night and day without a moments rest, got to go down to the promised land. Moses could have had his feeling hurt, or thought it was a little bit harsh, but by then he probably was so excited to finally get away from that bunch that he died from stress or heart attack, Poor Moses, took him 40 yrs to learn that you can take a horse water but you can't make him drink.

Because when God told Moses to only speak to the stone in order to get water from it for a miracle for God's people, he reacted with pride that God had given him this great responsibility and instead of merely speaking the words as God instructed in order to show His power, Moses "pontificated" if you will and began beating on the stone with his staff and making all these proud and boastful statements about how "we" will provide the water and not God. God wanted HUMILITY, not PRIDE in His work. Though God supplied the water anyway due to the desperate need of the people and eventually forgave Moses, He had to keep Moses in remembrance of his failure as an example to the leaders of Israel that would come after him. This is why Moses was only allowed to SEE the promised land from the vantage point of Mt. Nebo before he died.

The pre-Gospel books of the Bible have a recurring theme: God is constantly searching for a person who will TRUST in Him completely, who is willing to rely solely on Him without succumbing to their own abilities.
And it can be argued that the ONLY pre-Gospel person who fit this criteria was Abraham, when he was tested with regard to the sacrifice of his son Isaac. (Other times in Abraham's life he was NOT so trusting)
Despite all that God attempted to show and teach Moses, when faced with a difficult pressure-filled situation, he did not display absolute trust in the Lord. Thus, when in Numbers 20 God asked Moses to:
8"Take (J)the rod; and you and your brother Aaron assemble the congregation and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it may yield its water. You shall thus bring forth water for them out of the rock and let the congregation and their beasts drink."
9So Moses took the rod (K)from before the LORD, just as He had commanded him;
10and Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly before the rock. And he said to them, "(L)Listen now, you rebels; shall we bring forth water for you out of this rock?"
11Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and (M)water came forth abundantly, and the congregation and their beasts drank.
12But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "(N)Because you have not believed Me, to treat Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them."
[end quote]
So lack of faith and trust on the part of Moses (and Aaron!) had severe consequences; namely, that they would not be allowed to reach the Promised Land (he would see it from a distance, but would not walk into the land).
Peace.
ETA: Shane makes an EXCELLENT point about the words spoken by Moses, saying "Shall WE bring forth water..." rather than giving the proper credit to GOD for the miracle. Again, this illustrates their reliance on THEMSELVES rather than reliance on and trust in God.

He failed to give credit to God for his last miracle.God forbade him to enter the promised land as punishment and he went up to the mountain, saw the promised land and expired. He told the Israelites that Joshua the son of Nun was their new leader.

I read this over and over again, I feel bad for Moses. I think that he struck the rock three times because he thought HE didn't do it right....
Kind of like pushing a light switch on, and when it doesn't go on right away, you try it a few times to see if maybe you turned it off instead of on...

Because of his disobedience in the wilderness.
He struck the rock 3 times instead of once as told to by the Lord God. So he.....and everyone who was over the age of 20 I think....died off and never got to see the land that flows with milk & honey.
He did however, get to see it from a distance before he died.
