I've had two root canals and two teeth extractions (one of which actually happened a week and a half ago). I actually don't think that either of them hurt. In my personal experience, I was so completely numbed with novacaine (and used nitrous oxide for one of the tooth extractions), that I didn't feel any pain during the actual procedures. The only pain I experienced was minor, and it came in the days following the root canals/teeth extractions (my gums felt sore). This pain was so minor that I didn't even need to use the painkillers prescribed to me -- I found Tylenol and Motrin to be perfect for my discomfort. Of course, I was very careful to follow the dentist's post-care instructions closely, so that probably helped to speed the healing and minimize pain. If I had to pick which I disliked more, I would probably say the root canal, just because it took much longer to perform and my jaw was really tired from staying open so long. Hope this helps!

Depends on the tooth. I had a root canal a few weeks ago and it was TERRIBLE! But I had another root canal and it was totally fine- no pain, nothing bad my jaw was just a bit sore from keeping my mouth open for that long.
I had a tooth extracted a week ago and that was HORRIFYING!! I would have taken the root canal over that any day but the tooth couldn't be saved.
If they can save your tooth w/ a root canal, but it's infected, I really think you should be on antibiotics for a few days before they do the root canal. If there is infection present, the novacaine won't be effective and that is what made mine so awful.
So, root canal as long as there is no infection, or you get the infection cleared up before. Extractions leave lingering pain and complications. Root canal, if done properly, is said and done- no lingering pain excpet a sore jaw.

Getting a tooth pulled is nothing. They shoot you up with enough Novocaine that you barely feel a thing. I had several teeth pulled as a kid due to not having enough room in my mouth for all of them and there was little to no pain afterwards. The biggest thing was just dealing with the bleeding for a couple of hours afterwards.
I have never had a root canal but from what I understand they are no fun and a bit painful.

I got a root canal about a week ago or so, and it was no pain at all at the time. Two days later it hurt like a b*tch for a while, but it went away and hasnt hurt since, I have to go back for another one, but I dont mind because I didnt tink it was as bad as I expected it to be.
I also had a tooth pulled ages ago! I was like 3, and from what I remember it was horrifying!!!....Then again i was only 3 lol.
EDIT:
To go more in detail about the root cana, they basically open your tooth with that mini saw thingy they have, kill your nerve and pull it out, they then close it with a temporary cement, until your next visit!
While it DOES sound gruesome, I assure you, it's nothing.

I have to agree with Jen D.
I have had a total of 8 root canals (honestly!) and recently had to have one extraction (about 1 1/2 mons. ago).
Neither procedure was what I would call painful, because I was numb. The only discomfort was the day afterward, my gum was sore at the injection site.
Root Canal "pro": you save the tooth
Root Canal "con": there are multiple visits to finish the procedure
With tooth extraction: the only pain I had was a few days later when I developed dry socket...wow!!! Now THAT'S painful!

getting a tooth pulled.
However, I had a root canal a week before my wedding and didn't miss any work. I had to go 3x. I think it was the first that after, I felt a lot of pain but it went away after taking some Ibuprofen. I was able to return to work.

Getting a tooth pulled would be less painless because when a tooth is pulled the nerve is detatched ,hence no pain unless you end up with a dry socket. If one is considering having a root canal done, then they should find someone who specializes in root canals only. It will be painless. Arnie

I'm going to guess that getting a tooth pulled is the lesser of the two evils. I've never had a root canal, but have heard they are no fun at all! I've had teeth pulled and it was really no big deal.

I'll have to say, a root canal is more painful.
I dont really remember the root canal much, because it was along time ago. but all I know is, I needed gauze constantly because my tooth kept bleeding, just dont remember what i got done. and i was in a lot of pain and needded some pain killers lol
