I have had bad back pain that hasnt gone away despite pain killers. My GP (who I saw today) said he was re-ferring me to see an orthapedic in the local hospital.
I told my other half, & she was talking about it to her mum & her mum said that people have to pay to see them. Is this true???
Or has she got it confused with a cariopractor?

As long as your GP refers you and you are seen in the NHS system it should be covered.

If you are in the UK then you will not have to pay for specialist treatment if your GP has referred you, all of the costs will be covered by the state. The only time this is not so is if you just wanted to see an orthopaedic surgeon without your doctor's referral then you would have to pay.
Chiropractors and other pain relief professionals can be linked to a hospital or a surgery but many of them practise privately so you'd have to pay but again if you are referred then you wouldn't have to.

I'm in the same boat. if you are referred by a GP to see a specialist such as physiotherapist, orthapedic surgeon etc you should not have to pay. The GP may recomend that you see a chiropracter or osteopath as these can help with back pain etc but you will have to find one yourself not be referred and as they are not NHS you will have to pay.

I think you're getting answers from all over the globe.
If you're in the UK you don't have to pay if the GP refers you. However it would take up to 13 weeks. You can have a much quicker appointment if you ask your GP to refer you privately

Every Dr. has a fee; however most are covered by your health insurance (an ortho guy is usually included ) Most physicians are covered by insurance but certain Dr's don't follow under every insurance program. Call your insurance company to see if the referred Dr. is covered. If not ask your Dr. to refer you to 1 that your insurance company includes

If your GP has referred you then no you will not be asked to pay. It seems that your partners mother has indeed got confused, and yes you would have to pay to see a chiropractor, and they are not cheap I can tell you.

If your doctor is referring you to them, and they do a referral, your insurance will cover an orthopedic doctor, so don't worry. You may just want to check in with your doctors office before the appt. that they did the referral for you.

The only way to know for certain is to call the Dr and/or your insurance company.
