When he is preparing to take a nap on me he moves his paws like he is giving me a massage, but he kinda scratches me in the process. I don't think it's on purpose though.

This behavior is called puttying its the movement kittens do when they are feeding from their mother, your cat is doing this because he is feeling relaxed and happy, like when he was feeding, sometimes it hurts but he didn't mean to,don't scream,or move quickly or this will give your cat the wrong message just gently move his feet or slowly move away while stroking him.he loves you that's why he does it.

No, this is something tender they do, extending their paws like that the way they did when they nursed their mum. Their claws are just longer now! You can just trim them with a nail clipper at the edge, just 1 mm, the pointed edge of the claw, don't trim deeper because they have veins deeper.

it's called kneeding
like needing dough that you bake
anyway cats do this to show they care about you they do this first needing so you'll lay still and know that they want to cudle with you
if they scratch you trim their nails cats who do not have claws still do this action with the pads of their toes

He is not scratching you, he is giving you "Happy Paws". He is content. Its a good thing.

my cat does it too! i say hes softening me up so he can get comfy to sleep on me. also, they have scent glands between their toes. its a way of leaving their scent on you. if your cat lives indoors, you can trim its claws. you must never trim/cut a cats claws if they go outside. they need their claws to protect themselves from predators/other cats. if you cut them it will have no way of protecting itself. n they need them to climb up high fences n stuff if theyre being chased!
