Paul was saying do as I do for I do what Christ did. Basically he was saying the things that he preached about were the same as what he did. We was not saying do as I say but not as I do but rather do as I say AND as I do. He was showing that he was not a hypocrite

Peter wrote at 1 Peter 2 v 21, "For this cause you were called, because even Christ suffered for you, leaving you a model for you to follow his steps closely". Paul followed in Christ's footsteps inasmuchas anyone can follow Christ, the perfecter of our faith. So as we read Paul's letters, we try to follow his example in following the Christ.

Meaning we should live like Christ. Paul didn't mean to follow him as a person, but follow him because he follows Christ. The head of the man is Christ, and Paul was being lead by Christ.

You've got to look at the "big picture". At the beginning of this book to the Church at Corinth, Paul had lamented the breakout of factions among them and the fact that people were describing themselves as followers of Paul, Apollos, etc. If you look at the first chapter, you see him metaphorically wringing his hands as he tells them how wrong this approach is. They are to follow only Christ. Having expounded on this theme, he says that they are follow him only to the extent that he follows Christ and therefore sets them an example. The last thing he wants is for them to be Paul-followers, as he has made it quite plain earlier on (Chapter 1).

Try and live like christ is what I mean, paul is a chosen apostle which means Christ must have seen something in him. So let us follow in Christ's footsteps and apparently Paul was doing it right.

Paul was not one of the original 12 Apostles, but yet He was an Apostle for the Gentiles, Paul never knew Jesus in person, Because Paul perscuted the church & had some killed, yet Paul was highly in the knowledge of the law, When Paul was struck down By God on the road to Damacus, He said what would you have me to do Lord. After Pauls conversion, God took him out into the desert to teach him & take all of his highly educated knowlwedge of the law, Therefore when God was finish educating Paul, He came back & preached Jesus Christ, The 12 Apostles mainly preached to Jews, Paul preached to Jews & mainly Gentiles. & he follow the word of God as God led him to do & say certain things. In many of Pauls writings he said that he was An Apostle for the gentiles. Therefore we don't follow the flesh of Paul, but his teachings because his teachings was given to him by God.

“The son-ship of Jesus Christ is the greatest fiction of human history.” (Lord Bishop of Canterbury Commission, the Spiritual Head of England, 1910.)
“The son-ship of Jesus Christ, the Trinity, the blood sacrifice of the lamb of God, atonement are not the teachings of Jesus. These are all inventions of Saint Paul who never really met Jesus.” (Hastings Rashdall, The Theory of Good and Evil)
“There is strong reason to believe that St. Paul fabricated the belief system of Christianity from Zoroastrian mythology. In order to hide Paul’s plaigerism… Christians burned the library of Alexandria in 390 A.D. Books in that library kept Mithra’s original story of what Pauline Doctrine is an almost exact copy. (George Sarton , Introduction to History of Sciences) ,
"Christianity...[has become] the most perverted system that ever shone on man....Rogueries, absurdities and untruths were perpetrated upon the teachings of Jesus by a large band of dupes and imposters led by Paul, the first great corrupter of the teaching of Jesus." --- Thomas Jefferson
"Initially there were 34 gospels that were compiled by word of mouth. Four were chosen for unclear reasons and 30 were left behind [burned]. (Encyclopedia Britannica)
The Christian community continues to exist because the conclusions of the critical study of the Bible are largely withheld from them. --Hans Conzelmann

It meant that Paul himself was following Jesus' example, and he was encouraging the other Christians to copy him in doing the same, i.e following Jesus' example.
