How in simple terms is man made in the image of God?

Having the “image” or “likeness” of God means, in the simplest terms, that we were made to resemble God. Adam did not resemble God in the sense of God’s having flesh and blood. Scripture says that “God is a spirit” (John 4:24) and therefore exists without a body. However, Adam’s body did mirror the life of God, insofar as it was created in perfect health and was not subject to death.

The image of God refers to the immaterial part of man. It sets man apart from the animal world, fits him for the “dominion” God intended (Genesis 1:28), and enables him to commune with his Creator, it is a likeness mentally, morally, and socially, and yet we cannot even begin to fathom how much of this image we lost because of the fall of Adam, unless we look to the person of Jesus Who is the new Adam.

We have his qualities.

We can love.

we are aware we can die.

Animals are unable to comprehend this. However, they have an ability to sense danger. In the case of the recent tsunami, elephants headed for higher ground.

We do not know just how God looks.
(John 1:18) No man has seen God at any time; the only-begotten god who is in the bosom [position] with the Father is the one that has explained him.

(Exodus 33:20) And he added: “You are not able to see my face, because no man may see me and yet live.”

In that man is one half of a species of ape, and invented the god you are probably talking about in his own image, therefore that god must have made man (not woman, mind!) in his own image.
Stands to reason, doesn't it?
