It's important for a preschooler to learn letter recognition. This is much more important than learning "the alphabet." A child who recognizes letters is ready to learn to put letters together as the building blocks of words, and so he is ready to begin to read and write. Children learn the letters in their name first because those letters have meaning for them, so always begin by teaching name recognition and then the individual letters in the child's name. Then move on to other letters that have meaning to the child, such as m-o-m, d-o-g, d-a-d, etc.

Why wouldn't it be important? The alphabet is the basis for our english language...
Preschoolers are quite capable of learning this...especially if you teach it in song form...
Your child will have a head start with learning if the alphabet is taught to them...
This is a good thing..

It's important for a pre-schooler to learn the English alphabet because it will help them to write words, speak the language, and read.

Its much easier for them when they get past preschool. It helps so they won't be behind in learning when others might be ahead. Best to start when their under one yr. of age at home. My granddaughter is 2yrs. old and can sing the whole theme song of the ABC's. without an error. Teaching at home is a bonus as well before preschool.
Take care & have a nice day.

The student must also learn the sound of each letter in kindergarten. It is much easier on the teacher and student if the child already knows his\her alphabet.
you are your childs first teacher

THEY NEED TO BE PREPARED BEFORE KINDERGARTEN, THEY ARE GRADED FOR COLORING OUTSIDE THE LINES, ADDING AND SUBTRACTING AND MUST KNOW 25 WORDS BY SIGHT TO GET TO THE FIRST GRADE. SO KIDS NEED TO RECOGNIZE THE LETTERS OF ALPHABET AND COLORS BEFORE STARTING SO THEY WILL NOT BE BEHIND.

As a guess I would say it links the sound of a letter to it's shape which is rather handy for reading.

in a teachers eyes it is important to them because that is another thing they don't have to teach them. they don't want to do the job they are paid to do. thats my opinion. if it is up to us to teach the kids all that stuff then why is it against the law to not send your kids to school.
