What any other basic trainee does of hours: study mil skills, clean your kit, BS with your buddies, pull guard duty and other details, and sleep.

During basic you'll be cleaning kit for the next day, studying for tests, taking your turn on sentry duty and don't forget all those night time exercises.
Secondly once you finish training you won't be in a job thats anything like a 9-5, you'll still have training exercises, sentry duty, keeping your kit clean etc, and most of your weekends will be filled with the same.

Mate, during basic you will be cleaning your kit for the next day, studying for tests, helping your mates out with their stuff if they need it and a whole other bunch of stuff that comes up.
Basic training is there to strip you down and rebuild you into a functioning member of a team, not the sorry individual most of us are before the military.
Once you get to your trade school or part 2 training it gets easier and once out into the real world it is totally different, just accept that for the first 9-12 weeks it's not going to be much fun. Trust me though after you're done with it you will be able to look back and laugh.

You really need to do more research, in the evening you are busy getting your barrack room and kit up to scratch for the next days parade and inspection etc ... etc ...
After training you are busy learning how to do the job on extra courses not including all the night training, guard duty etc...etc...
We are talking here about the regular Army and not the T.A.!!!
So where ever you get the 8-5 from is beyond me.

If you think the Army is 9-5 then you are wrong.
In training you will be so whacked that going out will be the last thing on your mind.
Being a soldier is not a job it is a way of life. You could literally find yourself dealing with any situation at a moment's notice..
If you want 9-5 stay at home

during training you are gonna wish you were somewhere else, you are going to be completely @$£%"!& from being beasted all day that your gonna sleep like a baby (i did) and once the day is over and you have had scoff its kit cleaning time, shirts and lightweights to press no tramlines, boots to bull, locker to sort out, any washing you have to do then clean the block out and floors to buff, you will claps in your pit about one in the morning then your be up at 5 to repeat the day, and boy is that hard to get out of bed, but then again you have a nice friendly section commander to wake you up with tea and biscuits, ahh remember it well good old days but you only want to go through it once dont get backsquadded
good luck and never volunteer for anything

I think America would have eventually gained independence. If not shortly after 1776, then certainly by the 1930s when all of the other countries held by the UK got out (i.e. India, etc.). I think it would have changed immensely how America would have progressed. It would have always been under the jurisdiction of the king or queen. None of the important things, like supreme court cases, that have shaped America would have existed in the same way. Interesting quesiton.

When I was in the Marine Corps some British troops came out to 29Palms to do some training. Right there it shows that your nights aren't always free. The did always sit around a fire at night and smoke pot though. I couldn't believe it! It really probably depends on your mos.

Youl probably spend most of your nights sorting your kit out, boots, locker etc and the rest of the time catching up on some much needed sleep.
