Um...how bad am I going to have it if I enter as an E-1 when I go off to the US Navy? And will you be able to advance your rank in bootcamp and/or "A" school?

It won't matter, you be viewed as a lowly E-nothing regardless, and you won't advance after boot unless it's in your contract. I would be more concerned with the path to E4. An E1 would have to wait 18 months longer for an opportunity to advance to E4 than an E3.

Good question... Life won't be any easier as an E3 in basic so don't worry about it. E3 pay is more but not by a whole lot... time in rank for those is 6 months E1 to E2 and I THINK 9 months from E2 to E3... at least it was that way when I was in. They do have a command advancement in basic for top notch recruits... it's a free pass from E1 to E2 but it's tough to get and only one per company gets it.

Advancement doesn't take much to gain those first 2 ranks other than time and keeping your nose clean. Some of the E3's I knew when I was an E1 where a bunch of idiots t hat thought they knew everything about the Navy... turned out they didn't know more than anyone else, lol.

no difference whatsoever save your wallet. E3 are treated as Seamen Recruits just as much as E1s are during Boot.

to get to E2, you can be meritoriously advanced in Boot by recommendation( basically kick butt and impress the heck outta your RDCs) or you can serve the time in grade you need( I want to say 6 months).
