I presume Mad Maxx means "tread". If you don't know how to swim, you will be taught how and tested on your ability afterward.

Don't worry too much about it. You have to pass the swim test in boot camp, but you have several attempts at it and it's mainly about treading water.
I joined the Navy in 1987 and could not swim. I was only able to a "controlled float", but it was good enough. I never needed to swim on active duty, my ship never sank. If she did, as an engineer I probably would not have made it off the ship anyway.

A pretty big deal. First thing they're gonna do in boot camp is make you jump off a diving board into a pool. No matter if you've ever been in the water before or not. Take some lessons before you go.

They have a remedial swim course that anyone who doesn't know how to swim is required to take.
And you pretty much can get by with just floating above water for the allotted time.

It's like God said to Noah when he didn't want to build the arc. "Noah how long can you tread water?"
