Update: Amy L, I have seen a few questions asking if global warming caused the fires. Don't take shots at the asker because many of the global warming alarmists have asked that ridiculous question.

Good one! However, the climate change involving prolonged warmer temperatures and decreasing precipitation due to increased pacific ocean temperatures, have led to an increased risk for wildfires. This finding isn't something new and acutally came from a study done last year that was published in Science Express in July 2006.
