Pasta is common in Italy because it's cheap. Well, it was. They've been boycotting pasta because the price increased drastically. It's also easy to prepare. AND DELICIOUS!

HIspanic people "barbeque" goats...
Food choices and cultural heritage are very closely related.
Italians learned about pasta from their trade with China. It may have once been a symbol of the wealth involved with the China trade routes (almost a thousand years ago, I 'd wager...)
