I have been offered a sony kdl-32v2000 lcd tv at a low price from a friend, but was already contemplating buying a philips 37pdf9632 lcd. Is the Philips tv a lot better than the sony? if ayone has experience with one or both then I'd like to hear what you think...You'll help me choose.

If you want a high quality picture, high quality sound, good build quality and excellent reliability, buy the Sony.

If you don't want those things, buy the Philips...

That Sony has a good quality, only it doesn't have a HD Tuner inside. If you plan on receiving HD programming via an over the air antenna, you'll need a separate tuner. Also keep in mind, I'm almost positive this TV isn't made in the US - so if your friend lives overseas and you buy it, I'm not sure that it has an NTSC tuner in it. I've never heard of that particular Philips before.

As far as which one to get? In that size range, it hardly matters if you're dealing with a brand name. Think about it - unless you're sitting within 6-8 feet of it, they're all going to look roughly the same. So long as you stay away from certain trouble brands which I won't name and you deal with the name brands, you'll be fine with (most) whatever you decide upon.

These are the brands that I recommend in the 32 range:
Sony (s3000, xbr4 if youve got the dough)
Samsung (3232 is last years, 3253 is this years and has an updated contrast)
LG (LC5, kiiiller value)
Philips (not sure of the model number, but it looks really nice, glass base and piano black bezel)
Sharp (has a million different 32's, they're all top notch. gp1u for gamers, 43u for everyday tv, 22u if you're on a budget)

Finally, in regards to is philips better than Sony? When you jump into the 40 to 52 range, I'd say the average Sony set will look brighter, have better control of it's reds without calibration, some of the sony sets will offer 120 hz motion flow, sony has theatre sync to make connecting your components easier, and its Cross Media Bar menu system (the same one that PS3 and PSP uses) is really easy to use and very aesthetically appealing. Philips is by no means second rate, I'd just say Sony brings the extra mile to the table.

Sony is not the same company it was 5-10 years. ago. Run by greed, corner cuttin'.
Recalls....recalls........recalls.
I have lost all faith in Sony, buy the cheaper brand.
