Best to ask the dentist how long he expects you to be wearing the braces. I had one child who wore them from about 8 months, another who had them on for four years - and then did not use his retainer and had to have them put back on for another year and a half.
So it depends on what kind of work and how much the dentist is doing.
Whether you whiten your teeth once done is your choice.

I had braces for two years...after you get them off and you see your self with amazingly straight teeth it is all worth it!!!!! I took very good care of my teeth while I had braces so I didnt need to get them whitened...I also had the acrilic clear braces which, in my opinion, are better than the silver ones....they are a little more expensive though. The only down side is that I have to wear a retainer at night now....but its still worth it!!!!

I'm still wearing braces. I think I have 4 more months until I get them off. I started late last year. The length depends on how bad/good your teeth are. The lucky ones wear them for about a year, but I know some people who've had them for at least 3.

I didn't have braces, but my sister did. I think she had to wear her's for 3 years. She had a bad overbite.
I think it's just depends how severe your particular condition is. The dentist would be able to estimate about how long they'll need to be worn.
I also know that after the braces are removed your teeth feel a bit slimey.

i had braces for about 5 1/2 years cos i had to have A LOT of work done!
I had my teeth polished afterwards and my teeth felt nice and smooth for ages! felt amazing to be able to feel the front of my teeth with my tongue again! was almost orgasmic! lolz
Was well worth the discomfort!

im getting them for 18 months (HELP ME!)
and yes its planned that i'm getting my teeth whitened after because that would be so gross after u get them off!

i them for five months. i am gettin them on the bottom again soon.
THERE IS NO NEED TO GET YOUR TEETH WHITENED AFTER!!!!!!

I had them for about two years, got them off, didn't wear my retainer, had more put on, (SCAM) had them off, got a little touch up done on my front teeth.

supposed to have them for four years when i was ten but the dentist got pissed and took them off two years early
i laughed at him after wards
