My son's father has never been in his life. He wasn't there for his birth, and has never seen my child. After two years of searching I finally found an email for him and offered to meet him somewhere that he could meet him and I never got a response. I went after child support and after the DNA test came back I got an email from him. It was the first time I had actually heard from him since I was pregnant. It was insulting, demanding, selfish, and childish, and down right scary. I let several people read it and they all agreed, though there is no out right threat, you can tell that my son is currently nothing but a financial burden and finances are everything to him. I started to worry about the safety of my son and they all agreed, to make sure I wasn’t being paranoid. I emailed him back asking about signing over his parental rights which he jumped at the chance for. I don’t know enough about it and intend on calling a lawyer, however before I do and spend the money I wanted to see if there was anybody out there that knew anything about it. Is it even possible without an adoption? With Child Support is there a settlement amount, will I receive back child support up to the day he signed his rights, or do I never receive a dime. Right now I feel like I am trading my son’s safety and security for money, so I definitely need to look into my options. Thanks

Show those emails to the police. There is no reason for a man to make you feel afraid to get support from him for his son!!! Have a restraining order put against him. Have the child support delievered to the clerk of court, so that he will have no excuse for contact with you.

Depends on what state you live in. If you live in Texas- you can get the parental rights terminated after they have not paid $5000 in child support. If you live in most any other state- you will have to have someone there willing to adopt the child. If you are afraid for your child's safety- you should give the e-mails to the courts and ask for a restraining order. Why did you want this man involved with your child anyways? You were doing so well without the dude- why make him get involved? Just wondering.

In at least some states, parents can very easily sign away their parental rights. However, that does not relieve them of their legal obligation to pay child support.
