American civil war
UK
early 60's
I suppose that if the Confederate states had held out it would have had a different name.

The term civil war was also used for the English civil war between parliament and royalty. I suspect that if royalty had one this would have been recorded as a mere "rebellion".

The name of a war often depends on the winner or from which perspective it is viewed. I understand you have something called "The war of Independence" which is known over the pond as "The colonial little sulk about something or other let them have their way until they are older and then they'll want to come home". :-)

"American Civil War" or just "Civil War," 1980s in California. I think "War Between The States" showed up in one of my middle school textbooks, but the teachers and students used the term "Civil War" throughout. I want to point out that until I was about ten or twelve I associated the term with that specific conflict, as a noun. I don't recall anybody bothering to teach us what a civil war is in a broader sense.

The Civil War of the US was a civil war-not a war of aggression. The wars in Former Yugoslavia were civil wars too, which turned into a Jihad of Aggression, when aggressors intervened on behalf of the Muslims, in order to have good relationship with Islamic dictatorships such as Saudi Arabia.

We called it the Civil War. Born and raised in Wisconsin and had my several times great grandfather as one of the last survivors of the Monitor. The other two terms generally come from Southern or Confederate states.
