I've had an AGP GeForce Ti4200 for a long time, which is pretty good... But now I bought an AGP GeForce 7300 which runs on 128mb. As far as I know, both of them are 128mb and my computer has enough to run it perfectly.

Maybe I did something wrong with the drivers, 'cause I don't think I uninstalled them properly... But when I did and put the new card in, all the start-up text came up in gibberish and there were scanlines and garbage pixels everywhere-- even though it was all functioning.

I'm gonna try it again, but what is causing this? Is this familiar? I want to know if there's something other than the drivers making this happen...

I'm running under AGP8X, I'm positive. That doesn't seem to be the problem.

Even without an OS and a hard drive, a graphics card should properly display POST and BIOS menu. If display is gibberish at this start up level, there is something wrong with the card or the slot. Try reseating the card twice or thrice. Also check the card in another PC.

The drivers shouldn't be that off...sounds to me that new card may have a defective pipeline...ouch...i remember reading something like this for an ATI card and it caused strange gibberish like u describe. It seem to be a manufacturing flaw. I recommend you take back this new card and ask for an exchange and if the problem persists then you can be assured it is the driver...but i suspect it is not.

Set the graphics, to Standard VGA, Reboot. Then when it starts, you can then load the drivers for the new card. Reboot, then when it starts change the graphics to the new card, and reboot. This will work at times.
