I think there are many things going on that are not at all apparent. Think of it like this . . . suppose each cell of your body thought the same thing . . . "I am born, I eat, I work, I excrete, I reproduce, I die . . . what is my purpose? It seems like I have none!" All the while it seems like nothing else is going on from the vantage point of the kidney cell say, it is actually a necessary part of this thing called "YOU" . . . something that one cell of you could not possibly conceive of.
Meanwhile, these cells die and go on . . . not one cell in your body is alive now that was alive ten years ago, yet YOU continue despite your physical body being totally different . . . you don't even consciously register this. Your body is compose mostly of space . . . with tiny atomic nuclei surrounded (relatively) far away by electrons, yet despite being mostly empty space you perceive yourself as solid. There are always many things about you of which you are unaware since they are subtle, or not now noticeable or apparent to you.
My personal belief is that we are hear to learn to be complete human beings and once we have perfected ourselves through a number of incarnations we continue on in some other fashion that is beyond our ability to conceive of now. However you look at it, its pretty amazing that we exist at all, and when you reflect, the whole web of life and the entire cosmos seems a miracle in itself, and to me it seems that each and every individual unit of consciousness is a focal point at which the entire universe expresses itself.
There is *always* more than meets the eye!

Well, who's to say it has a purpose? Maybe it does. Maybe there's some big plan. Every single person/animal/existence effects something in some way and that something goes on to affect something else. Every single person that lives changes the world, more than they realize. So maybe the existence of each single person is meant for a final result.
I'm definitely more spiritual than scientific and i believe people have "souls" or whatever that always exist. And so maybe some souls chose to live a life as a person.. and maybe there are some that never live.
I'm really into philosophy and once read this book, "Saved by the Light" by Dannion Brinkley, who 'died' twice. The first time in the 50s i think, kind of awhile back. He was dead for an hour(struck by lightening) and when he was revived he had 100+ prophecies or something which he wrote down and supposedly 90 something of them came true since then, of course there's no telling how true that is, there's definitely the possibility that that was a publicity stunt or whatever but assuming it's not, he claims that he also learned that people aare "souls" that volunteered to live for whatever purpose. So that's where that ^ comes from.
Also, there's Plato's "Myth of Er" in The Republic, but that's fiction. The story is really interesting though, people live their lives, die, go to heaven or hell, depending on HOW they live their lives, for 1000 years. Then they get to choose their next life. Pretty cool, kind of idealistic thinking but i like it.

Yes, an afterlife can give a greater significance to this life........ however, I do not believe in the afterlife concept as propounded by various religions..... but I do believe that life does not end with the death of the body that seems to carry the life.... this belief is simply based on the fact that nothing in this universe seems to finish or vanish to zero, everything seems to only keep changing or transforming rather than ending completely... hence it looks eminently possible to me that life may take another shape or characteristic once the body it is now using gets unusable. This means a continuity to life perhaps without the help or restrictions of the physical body. That sort of a belief helps me look at this life as a stepping stone to another life after death which may not be bound by space dimensions and perhaps not even by time!! It helps me live this life in a positive way rather than rueing the total insignificance of whatever one does in this life.

If you are asking about the after life it was Halloween night the biggie for ghosts to make an appearance and yet still didn't see one. So not a big believer in the after life sorry.
If there is more than meets the eye? More than breathing and living everyday. Ageing and death. Probably not but why dwell on it.
I hope I will be shown more than meets the eye eventually one day, but I asked myself this similar question in my formative years and still have found no answer.

I see life as a journey and we should make the most of it and leave our footprint in the world. You say all we achieve is for nothing when we die, but think of all the lives we touch and affect. No matter what we do we leave a footprint. I'm a teacher and one of the main reasons for me going into that profession is to make a difference in other people's lives.
There could be something else later maybe, or maybe this is just it, but to be honest this isn't as bad as it seems. You get to work to get money, as long as you pick a job you enjoy, then you're sorted...you fall in love and have a family, both are indescribable feelings, you get to watch them grow up and then you pass on leaving a little piece of you in your children, who carry it on and pass it to their children and so on.
The point is make the most of it, it ain't as bad as people say

the most you can do is be a good person. Be there for loved ones...or even a complete stranger. If you have been a positive impact on at least one person's life, then I believe your life was worth living. If could save one deserving life before I die, then I would go to the grave a bit happier.(I would feel like a failure if I grew up to be unsuccessful, and I can't determine how things will turn out)

interesting!!!!
i think to get the answer u should stop thinking that life is life.
its actually a resting place for our spirit.its like a nest and our spirit a bird .
so if we understand this concept we will automatically understand that we live life to enjoy it and understand our form (human ,insect, animal, bird etc) and do good work for ourself and othersand then die so that our journey starts again to reach god(knowledge).
so death is the pathway to reach knowledge and knowledge is the only aim for us
and life is just a break.
but the achievements we achieve in life is to reach that pathway (death)but only the death which has come for oldage or some sickness.
thank u .hope u get some help from this.

Ah ! This is the question that so many before you have asked ; some of those who seeked an answer , have got one ; my friend , many come to India in search of it . Why India ? Because many here have recorded the finding of that goal / purpose , in times past . Given the right Guru , or Guide , one may find the purpose ....
There is one other thing... the very fact that this question has occurred to you , is proof that maybe you are destined to find the answer , for there are many who never think to ask .
Go for it ! and may you find what you need .

Almighty has chosen you, and every other person for a
particular purpose. The aim of life is to understand
the greatness of the creator. And to search for the
purpose for which a soul is given human life. This
purpose differs from person to person because it is
dependent on the past Karma of the soul. But one thing
is sure. Human beings are the highest of all creation.
The rest of the creation is intended for the use of
human beings. How you use it is dependent on your mantal
attitude. You cannot specify one purpose for all.
When you understand the purpose of your life, you will
derive the highest happiness of your life.
