Well thats open to interpretation. I had two very different births.
First was induction and it was very painful, like major, intense period pain straight after having my waters broken and then it graduated into an extremely intense vice like grip around my stomach. Also my contractions 'piggy-backed' each other which means they didn't come and go every 2-3mins but came one on top of the other for 6-7 mins and then breaked for 1 mins. That was the worst part. Hardly a break inbetween.
The second time it started naturally with dull aching cramps and slowly but surely got into stronger period like cramps and then went into the vice like grip around the tummy but manageable because they weren't nearly as intense as the first time.
Both actually deliveries were the same. When the head crowns and comes out its like being branded like a cow. A really hot, searing pain unlike anything else I or you will have experienced before (unless you've been branded I suppose!)
It really is the worst bit but the shortest so entirely manageable.
With both of them I also only had one shot of pethedine an hour before delivery to speed up the dilation (and by that stage I was that far gone it didn't help pain but it sure did get me dilated the last 3cm fast!). No other drugs, just the hot shower and heat packs for pain relief.
Oh and the first took 8hrs and the 2nd took 9.5 hrs.
Hope that helps explain it a bit more. It really is a unique experience that is individual to everyone.

Its not the worse pain I've ever had, kidney stones were. But it is bad, like really really really bad period cramps and the crowning is probably the worst part, its like stright fire. But the relief you feel after wards and the for lack of better word rush you feel when you feel the baby coming out (after the head and shoulders) is unbeleivable. I had my first daughter completly natural and plan on doing so again in april

It's hell...pure and simple hell. It's a method of torture and should be outlawed, cruel and unusual punishment! Seriously I don't see how anyone can actually recommend it. I went through 3 days of back labor and was denied any kind of medication for the first 2 days...on the 3rd day they gave me something to help me sleep (I slept for an hour). I could have killed them all if I could have stood up straight. I might have reacted differently if I had delivered a healthy baby...but she was stillborn.

The contractions are painfull, but not so you cant control yourself, they are intense and you cant think of anything during them other than wanting them to be over, imagine a cross between really bad period pains (10x stronger) and trapped wind! lol!
Then when your getting to the pushing stage, but your not quite dialated enough, its agony, as you body has this uncontrolable need to push, and you have everyone around you saying, "no you dont need to push yet" "its too early" etc etc and YOU KNOW you NEED to push!!!
Its horrible feeling, but not painful when pushing, just felt as If you have no control over your body!
