I'm a freethinking futurist and I believe that it is inevitable that one day there will be no countries. As the world becomes smaller due to greater cooperation between nations, faster travel (we will be able to go anywhere we want in less than an hour in a couple of decades), and more intermingling between humans we will eventually become like a one wold culture...the culmination of a mixture of all the cultures. Sooner or later people will realize that nationalism will be counterproductive to the survival of our species and planet. Before you call me a delusional tree hugger think about it...it may take 200 years or more but it's gonna happen eventually.

I like your thinking. I'm not quite that optimistic. That does sounds great, probably the only way the human race would actually survive. Most people aren't really like that though, i guess it's human nature or just soome people's nature but we're for the most part just like all the other animals, we have a need to have our own territories, to protect and stand up for ourr people and view everyone else as the enemy. We were designed like other animals and we've always been like this, i don't really see that changing at least not before we do all die out.

Some people would say yes, but I don't think so. You are just extending your goodwill and patriotism to the entire planet instead of limiting it. Patriotism or love of country is these days often synonymous with nationalism or national bigotry. I don't see where that "my country is better than yours and my people are more valuable than yours" as good for anything but starting wars. By being a good global citizen, therefore, you are being more patriotic by wishing the best for everyone.

Although the world is smaller, people are farther apart from each other, mentally and ethically. The Internet is a good example -- full of lies.

Actually, a global citizen is anyone who works to make the world a better place. It is not about patriotism.

I agree, just like John Lennon imagined it - no countries and perhaps no religion (at least no the divisive kind).

As a family we travel a lot and feel like global citizens, it means my children have no racism, no nationalist dogma, no trouble with relating to any culture we come in contact with. It is a wonderful future.

You are well ahead of the rest of the world. What is patriotism, other then a form of control. You on the other hand are beyond that, and will be one of those people who can reach for the stars as you will not be fighting some battle that is not important anyway

Everybody always has been a global citizen. They just didn't, or still don't, know it.
It's kind of like enlightenment. You are enlightened if you know that you have it, a common mortal if you don't know it.
