Rapid-cycling? Ultra-rapid cycling? Cycles that vary month by month?

Can the length and timing of a bipolar person's cycles change depending on their age and possible other issues (such as not taking meds, et cetera)?

From what I've read, rapid and ultra-rapid cycling is less common than cycling every 30 days or even longer. I don't know if not taking meds changes the cycle but I do know that it definitely changes the mood. For example, I'm pretty well 'normal' when I take my meds but if I don't for a few days I get manic. For me, periods of mania are always followed by deep depressions. So I avoid the unexpected & stay on my meds as best I can. I hate it when I forget to take them (usually when out of my routine).

I don't know which type is the most common, but I will say that a person who's bipolar should never stop taking his/her medications even when he/she is feeling good. Stopping medication is just asking for trouble.
