I know this may sound a bold question.

But I was at least a bit shocked to read in a fiction book or novel that a doctor inserted his gloved and lubricated hand into the woman's vagina while performing an abortion.

If it matters, the story happens in India, and the writer is Indian as well...

Oh, and yes... I'm aware that this could happen sometimes in childbirths, when the placenta is not delievered...

But aside from that... how often can gynecologists do this?...

Oh, and just for the record, I'm asking this out of curiosity, not that I'm concerned about that or anything...

Besides, isn't this a place to ask questions?

Yes, it is normal and ok for a gynecologist to stick a gloved hand in to a woman's vagina to do the annual exam to make sure that the uterus and ovaries are normal in shape and size.

It's a common part of a pelvic exam. The doctor uses this method, one hand on the outside of your abdomen and one or two fingers in the vagina to palpate your internal organs. They also can do this with a finger in your rectum and one in your vagina. It's not exactly pleasant but nothing about a gyno exam is and it's for your own good.

That's completely normal, the glove gives protection against infection and the lubrication is so the woman doesn't feel as much pain.
