Ok so my old PC is kinda working slow but since i reformatted it, its been fine for now...

i was wondering if the slowing or freezing of my PC before was due to the cpu fan or RAM.
Can anyone give me insights on this.
Specs: Intel Celeron 2 GHz
80GB HDD
256 MB DDR PC3200 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce MX 4000

Im running XP, and i checked my cpu i have 2 slots for DDR im planning to buy another 256MB---cheap =) is it good or should i just buy a 512 and remove my old 256 MB RAM?

Thanks!

CPU fans are needed because the electronics in the CPU chip (the Celeron chip) generate more heat than can be released into the air surrounding it. It's the same reason you use a fan in Summer, to keep cool. If the chip overheats even slightly, the processor may not work correctly, resulting in the computer locking up.

With any version of Windows, adding RAM will usually speed things up. XP likes to have a minimum of 256MB, but it will have some disk access (swapping) if you try to run multiple applications at once. Adding RAM should reduce that.

As far as upgrading your RAM goes, it makes no difference the size of the individual DIMM(s), if they are the same access speed. If you can get faster RAM for no increase in price, go for it. The separate DIMMs will access at different speeds if you set them up correctly in the BIOS. Of course, if you are going to buy a 512MB RAM, why not just add it to your current 256MB RAM to get a total of 768MB? That should give you a little extra speed as well.

1st of all check your system is compatible to 512 MB ram.
or PC400 or up to PC533 MHz ram,
Intel celeron mostly slow in starting any os.
better next time for best PC use inter original series.
now all software are designed for new systems and wanna big hard disk and must be good processor speed with minimum 512 MB DDR ram
so according to your system use small soft wares.
due to some security problems windows XP now have to much back round script running that's y your PC slow.
security software make PC slow.
use low level security for best PC performance which is not rec mended from my side.
if you run PC on low Level security then your PC on high risk.
better upgrade your ram to 512 for best speed on your system

Since you did nothing to your cpu fan and it works fine now that would mean it wasn't because of your cpu fan wouldn't you say? If your cpu heats up you might experience slow performance but that would be brief because your computer would automatically shut off to protect the overheated cpu.
As far as buying ram goes go here and click on "scan my system" it will give you mutliple upgrade options. If it will let you put 2 512MB sticks in you may want to yank that 256 stick out and put 2 512 sticks in since ram is cheap now.

The fan is required as the Computer can't Sweat like us Human Beings. The fan is only to cool the various parts that produce heat including the Processor. The computer also can't take bath like us so you need to dust the inside every month or something.

Load less programes during the start-up and the computer loads and functions faster.

Also go in for more RAM, 256MB has become outdated though that is what I have and I am happy using. HEE HEE!

CPU fan is very important because if u charge your pc, the cpu will break down and it is better if the ram is in one piece: the 512 is better than 2X 256.

If you have enought slots, it's better to have more memory chips intead of just one. I suggest you buy another 256 MB and keep your current one too. Of course if you can afford it, you could buy two 512 MBs =)

The CPU fan is there to cool your processor. Without it, your processor would be fried :D

Hope this helped!

CPU fan is meant for cooling the chips on the cpu. If you are running only text applications and the PC is still freezing after prolonged use, it could be the fan. If freezing takes place in graphics and other RAM hungry applications, it could be less RAM.

Cheap Ram has shown to cause more problems than just about any other reason you can think of.
I suggest you might give further thought to the Ram you purchase for your machine.

If your motherboard has a temp guage, usually the BIOS screen has one, or there is software that allows you to see the temperature, you can run your computer and check the temp, if it jumps while your PC has a heavy load, then upgrade fans.

You can just run a memtest to check the RAM. You can download the boot iso and burn it to a CD , then boot from it to automatically run the memtest.

well..a cpu does sm where around million or more calculation per second..thats why it heats up..Adding more ram to ur machine will defntly speed up things, plus if ur OS is old, better clean it up and reinstall, the heat wont be an effect of ur performance.a higher capacity ram will save u another slot for furthur memory expansion. ;) hope this helped u.
