I heard it mentioned in an old song, and in an answer or two here.

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with marmite either. I'm in the US if that helps?

its great. its made of yeast extract with just a touch of salt added, well maybe not a touch. it could be the resion that australia is so short on water.

the nearest equivalent in the us would be a black salty slightly bitter (abit like beer) penut butter.

okay its alot like marmite, only worse lol In my opinion
A vegan non dairy, yeast based spread that usually goes on toast. it contans niacin and lots of salt, vegemite has more of a caramel texture but NOT caramel flavour where marmite is more salty and darker. Theyre both black, well shades of black.

comes in a jar with yellow tape
marmite is in a plastic container with yellow letters and red background...

Im not a fan of it but its definetly something u grow up with :)
aussie and new zealanders should know what ur talking about

there is a vegemite vs marmite debate thats been going on for years lol

Yeast Extract, Salt, Pottasium Chloride, Malt Extract, Caramel Color, Natrual Flavor, Nicotinamide, thiamine hydrochloride, riboflavin, sulfur dioxide.

VEGEMITE--Concentrated Autolyzed Yeast Extract.

Anyways, I'm American, but I ordered a jar of vegemite through the internet. (For reasons I can't understand, I couldn't find it at the local IGA store.)

I tried it, and did not like it. But in all fairness to australia, the vegemite I bought was made my Kraft, so maybe they just don't make very good vegemite.
The kind I got is a thick sandwich spread, but came in a 4 OZ jar, so I don't know how many sandwiches you can make with that.
Also, the jar I got is very, very strong in flavor.

It's basically a spread we consume on toast and sandwiches - often but not always with cheese!

Quite an acquired taste...it's made from a form of yeast - I'm not sure to be honest if it's fermented at all or not, but it's a strong, extremely bitter taste by itself (certainly can't eat it like honey!) but a pleasant spread on bread. Hard to really explain what it tastes like - quite strong and very unique flavour.

Product itself is black and fairly thick...packed in glass jars with yellow labels with a red diamond and white "Vegemite" in the diamond...

Hope that helps!

Vegemite is a dark brown, savoury paste made from yeast extract, used mainly as a spread. It is made from left over brewers yeast, which is a product of the beer making process, and various vegetable and spice additives. Tastes somewhat similar to beef bullion.

We Aussies love it! It's a concentrated yeast extract. It has a salty taste, but I can't describe anything it tastes like. You use it as a spread on toast, but sparingly as it is strong. We also like vegemite and cheese sandwiches. I can't really think of anything else it is used in. I think some people may put it in beef casseroles for flavour. It also has in it's ingredients salt, malt extract, colour.

Vegemite is a paste/spread that is extremely salty. If you ask me-it tastes horrible! However some people enjoy spreading so all over their bread! Yuk!
