When my youngest 2 children were rather small, we took some books out of the library on 'knotting', and bought some hemp from a crafts store (it was also available at Walmart, we found out later). There are many bead shops where we live (a college town), so picked up all sorts.

It turned out to be very easy...we were turning out necklaces and bracelets in about 15 minutes each (after a few days of getting used to it).

There is the 'regular' hemp (hard and scratchy, but easy to work with), and there is clothing texture hemp (soft and comfy, but a bit more difficult to work with when knotting).

It's a nice hobby, and one easy enough that you won't become frustrated while learning how-to. :)
