The internet opens up the possibility of greater interaction between different people, cultures and sub-cultures. The anonymity of the internet also allows people to be more honest and explore areas of life without the fear of public disapproval. All of this means you can really learn a lot about other worlds, sometimes dark, and people, without the censor of a public façade. Given all of this, do you ever visit discussion forums in areas which would ordinarily be beyond your reach in the real world, out of prurient or academic interest? If you do, which ones?

Yes. The internet can be an awesome tool for reaching out and interacting with people (or groups of people) you may never have had the opportunity to interact with otherwise. I love going into chat rooms that originate in foreign countries. I've had very interesting conversations with people from many different countries, and talked to people about global issues. It's fascinating to expand your world view this way. I've learned a lot of fascinating things about other cultures: customs, religions, and political ideologies. If you can't go to foreign lands yourself, going via the internet can be a wonderful opportunity to connect with and learn about far away places and people. It's also great to share with others your own experiences.

Nothing prurient, not my thing, and not too much academically, but I do spend a lot of time visiting castles all over Europe; especially England and France. Most recently visited Hampton Court and Blenheim, which is truly spectacular. And Versailles, the Hall of Mirrors, is wonderful. I also found Dracula's Castle in Transylvania, which is up for sale ($100 million, asking price) and thinking what a great place to spend Halloween night.

Heh.

I troll through radical feminist forums all the time.

If this wasn't limited to forums, I used google earth to check out places like the current site where the city of Babylon used to be (nothing there), areas that I know there is fighting in Iraq, the pyramids, the eiffel tower and the Chernobyl and Pripyat evacuation zones last night.

Know what this is:

Because my son is in politics and I work in academia and with children, I am highly constrained. But, I LOVE conspiracy theories and gorge on them on the Internet. Ask me about aliens, hollow Earth theories, the Montauk project, the Bohemian Grove Society, you name it. I'm an expert. : ) (Just don't tell my son.)
