To make an electric magnet I have a wire a battery and a piece of iron - the only problem is the piece of iron has a small hole right through the middle of it and im wondering if it will still become magnetic?

Yes. the hole won't matter.

Actually you can make an electromagnet without the metal core just by wrapping the wire in a coil. But it is more concentrated (stronger) with the metal core.

Yes it will. It is the invisible magnetic flux produced around the wire that produces the magnetism. The iron core is just amplifying it all.
