One's spirit is broken when he/she allows the interface of others into his/her orra! The bare essence of your being is your "spirit", who you are is within your spirit! How we love and love others, and how we determine what's real to us within our hearts and souls is the true reinnance of all of us and when someone comes into contact with us within our "spirit" and we give ourselves to them freely to be betrayed or abandoned, used or abused and thrown within; the expressions and feelings that we share inside of ourselves is what's broken and our heart, love, soul, and innermost feelings of a loss so great with no recourse or direction is truly when our "spirit" is broken.

Definitely the loss of a loved one. At times we don't realize the magnitude of the loss until it is too late.

I recently lost a friend to "crack." That pretty much did for a long time. I blamed myself for not being able to help him, but he was so sure that he was invincible. I don't feel so broken, but pretty badly dented now.
