ok i don't know much about football. I watch it once in a blue moon. So i watched the video on trinity lateral(ing) the ball 15 times as yahoo states. So what is a lateral? I thought you can't pass the ball once you pass the line of scrimage.

You are allowed 1 Forward pass from behind the line of scrimmage per play, And a lateral is a backwards pass, and you can have as many as those as you want. And football is based off of Rugby, its just the rules have changed over time along with many parts of the game.

You can only throw the ball forward once as long as you are behind the line of scrimmage. However you can throw the ball laterally (sideways) or backwards as many times as you like.

You can lateral the ball, not pass it, backwards or to the side but not forward in any way, if you are past the line of scrimmage. There are some nuances in the rules, courtesy of the Oakland Raiders.

You can lateral an unlimited # of times if you only throw the ball sideways or backwards...You can throw a pass forward only one time per play (zero times if you cross the line of scrimmage first).

There is no such thing as a lateral any more, it is by rule a legal backward pass. A legal backward pass is legal as long as it is thrown behind you and is allowed anywhere on the field after a snap or a free kick.

It's only used in situations such as that because it's extremely risky. Since it's a backwards pass, if a team loses control of the ball, it is considered a live ball - a fumble. It's very easy for the other team to pick up the ball.

You can pass it as long as the person you pass to is behind you. That is a lateral.
