Hold back plenty of taxi money, you'll need it to go from hotel to hotel on the strip for enjoying the themes. There is a bus system too.
Las Vegas is a sightseeing vacation. Be sure to wear good walking shoes. By the way, there are very few places to sit down except where you gamble so sit down whenever you can and rest your feet. You pay for a glass of water because it is in short supply out there in the desert. Buy one of the water belts and carry a bottle of water with you.
It is VERY easy to spend all your gambling allowance in a couple of hours and then you are left with nothing. But sightseeing the hotels is wonderful. Each have an outlandish theme. You need to map out what you want to see.
Be sure to go over to the Treasure Island Hotel to see the out doors pirate ship and the English ship clash.
Go to Bellagio to see the lake with a fabulous fountain spraying water in time to music. Beautiful in the day and at night. Inside the lobby is breathtaking.
Caesars Palace in a marvel and a must see.
The list goes on and on.
(we use to go a couple of times per year)

Staying on the strip the Stratosphere or Circus Circus will be the best in terms of price. However, the location is not ideal. When I stayed at Circus Circus the monet we saved on the room got spent on Taxi Cab fares.
Excalibur is in a good location on the strip and is also at a reasonable price. This is where I stay if I am on a Budget for the room.
Ceasers is excellent both for accommodation and location, but may stretch your budget a little more.
Use one of the many hotel sites to compare prices and find the one you want. Before you book check that hotels web site. I have found it is usually best to cut out the agent and book direct.

The first time I went to Vegas I stayed at the Luxor Hotel. I recommend it if you're on a budget, yet want to stay on the strip. It's a nice hotel, but it's not first class. Very comfortable, and a good value. It's at the end of the strip, but the bus will take you anywhere, or you could walk, or take a cab. Enjoy your trip, Vegas is great!

I stayed at the Greek Isle the first time I went. I did a lot of walking, but I had time and needed the exercise so I didn't care. Plus, World's Greatest Magic is at the Greek Isle. Last time I went, I stayed at the Tropicana, which is near the south end of the strip. That area is very good. Planet Hollywood is closer to the middle and has three magic shows (Pamela Anderson!).

Most rooms on the strip are in the $100-$150 range. If you want even lower then go to the further end of the strip like Circus, Excalibur, Riveria or stratosphere. Otherwise, the rooms are pretty much the same.

for your first time, I would say the Imperial Palace. It is in the center of the strip (Harrah's now owns it), it is cheap, about $60-90. It has balconies to get a good view. Yes its older, but I like it. I have stayed there many times and I really like it better than the expensive places. remember, in vegas you spend very little time in your room. there is also a monorail stop at the back of the hotel.

I think that downtown is pretty cool... it's not on the strip, but it's nearby, and it has it's own "strip". It was actually the original strip before they built the newer bigger strip. EVERYTHING is cheaper there... $6 tall margaritas, and you won't find a $5 blackjack table on the strip. Only downtown. Plan on playing $20-$50 hands when on the strip. And the slot machines are $1 a pull on the strip as well. (You can find quarter slots downtown)

MGM, Monte Carlo, Circus Circus, or save and stay at the Golden Nugget downtown.
Here are tips on how to get a discount hotel room and more.

Flamingo, or MGM, those are the 2 best corners on the strip.
But, if your dough is a little better, stay at Wynn (if you have NO kids), Venetian, or Bellagio. Those are the classiest places for my taste.
