In terms of dominance in the African plains the lions would be on top, with hyenas second. In response to some of the posters here, the only hyenas that primarily scavenge are brown and striped. Spotted hyenas are mainly predators. The aardwolf feeds mainly on insects.

Hyenas are mostly scavengers, but based on the facts, hyenas for sure. I've seen them take on lions with no back up, and win. they are somethin' else, man!
