Two things get me going.
1)=The Japanese point blank refusal to stop killing Whales!!! Every single product that was once gotten from whales can now be produced my man or sourced else where. Except whale MEAT but goodness sake we eat enough of Earths creatures do we really NEED to eat whales too. NO we dont.

2)==Global warming and the stupid 'bury your head in the san' attitude of many governments. Entire pacific islands are being swallowed up by the increasing sea levels. polar bears are starving or drowning because there is no longer as much pack ice as there was. Droughts and El Nino are increasing===etc, etc, etc

I could go on and on but I had better stop before I fall off my soapbox and break my neck!!!

Livestock & the environment: Finding a balance THIS is intended to contribute to solving one of today's most crucial agricultural dilemmas: how to find a balance between a fast growing global demand for food and the need to sustain the natural resource base of land, water, air and biological diversity. It is a direct response to the concern for food security, as expressed at the World Food Summit, and to the concern expressed for the environment through several international conventions, such as the International Convention on Biological Diversity, the Montreal Protocol on the emission of greenhouse gases and the Convention to Combat Desertification. It is also cast in the light of changes in the global trade environment, following the Uruguay Round Agreement, which may bring about significant changes in the patterns of trade in livestock and livestock products. Fully aware of these concerns, a group of multi-lateral and bilateral donors and other organizations undertook to identify ways to help the livestock sector to satisfy future demands while at the same time preserving the natural resource base. These are the Commission of the European Union, DANIDA of Denmark, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Ministère de la Cooperation of France, BMZ through GTZ in Germany, the Directorate General of International Cooperation of the Netherlands, the Overseas Development Administration of the United Kingdom, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Agency for International Development of the United States, and the World Bank. Focussing on livestock production and processing, which often have been associated with negative environmental effects, this report identifies how to alleviate the negative and enhance the positive impact of livestock on the environment and thereby contribute to the sustainable use of the natural resource base. This main report is directed at a technical audience in the domains of agricultural development, livestock production and the environment. In parallel, books are availble at local library hope this helps

The pollution! Children are being born in record numbers, with asthma! There is a town, nearby and they are known as the "concrete capitol." What many people do not know is that there are record numbers of children, who live in this town, who suffer from leukemia! This is being attributed to the emissions from the concrete plants!

Two years ago, I was watching TV and folding clothes. The story, on TV, caught my eye as it was a doctor from the Medical Center in which I utilize. She was boldly speaking out as she had just been diagnosed with lung cancer and yet, she had never been around smokers and was never a smoker, herself! She boldly proclaimed to the media that she was 100% sure that it was the pollution which made it possible for her body to develop cancerous cells! I wept as she was very young and a young Mom as well! She died less than three months after her proclamation.

Therefore, I have seen and experienced, firsthand, what pollution can do to the human body!

Also, the acid rain, from all the pollution is destroying ancient pieces of artwork. If this continues, much will be destroyed for the future generations!

I am concerned about green space. In my county, every piece of land they can find, they are building on. While they try to leave some of the older trees standing and plant new ones, you still end up with more people, cars, and pollution. I am also concerned about the eco system. I have more critters living in my back yard now. We have taken away their habitat all for the all mighty dollar.

I think the honey bee problem is based on a virus. Preach Jilly!!

Overall - global warming.

Specifically air pollution - particularly vehicle emissions. Was listening to a radio report the other day on the effects on commuters and how the longer the commute the more 'dangerous' the inhalation can be. They suggested keeping your windows closed to ward off SOME of the muck.

And I have noticed that far too many children these days suffer from asthma. When I was a child I knew only ONE kid who had asthma! Now it seems everyone's child has some degree of asthmatic condition.

I too have tried to get the mobile home park where we live to use a recycling program. Nothing is done it just falls on deaf ears. And the manager is the first to complain if we put things outside of the dumpster so our efforts fell by the wayside.Dont know what else to do. We need the managers approval or we get in trouble and maybe evicted.

It's the way we are destroying the Earth with all the modern things we can't live without. Resources are being used to have bigger, better, newer, and more, all the time without giving back. Land, farms, forests, wildlife are all being gobbled up to build more businesses, stores, homes, etc. as old ones are left standing empty. Families are often smaller, yet vehicles are bigger and use more resources. All this leads to more pollution and health problems, and less of the things we need to ensure a bright future.

The emmense amount of CO2 we are putting into the air, along with NO2, SO2, and CO....all contributing to Global warming and acid rain...the climate is running amok..we are seeing droughts of biblical proportions just starting. The average temperature is rising at an alarming rate, and yet, because this Administration has lied over and over, has led the American community to think this is a natural happening. It is natural, but never at the rate we are seeing. If it continues, we are doomed to a very very deep ice age within 100 years. You and I will not be here to see it, but then again, many others will not be either. WE show total recklessness in the energy we use, waste, and consume, often with no real need. The movie, "The Day After Tomorrow" contains very real circumstances that will happen if we continue on this path. China is belching out more smog and pollution than anyone else, and I see no end in sight. BUT, here in America, we CAN and must reduce....greatly... our pollution. The answer is NOT ethanol, for its waste, again, is CO and CO2...and it uses oil to grow it (oil is used in the production of fertilizer!) WE probably will be better off cracking water into H2 and O2, the waste product is water! Sun and wind can easily supply the power needed for cracking water into its individual parts. the danger here is that H2 will explosively combine with O2 in the presence of nothing more than UV radiation...so very real safeguards must be in place,...but H2 is a very viable energy source, is very clean, its waste will induce rain over a broad area! Seems to solve many problems at once, doesn't it? The Hybrid cars I see today are a joke, as are electric cars...these things are anything but efficient, and somewhere, somehow, fuel is used to produce electricity..it is simply moving the smog from one area to another...doesn't seem like much of a global solution to me...all the hybrid cars in the world will do nothing to reduce our problems...this is nothing more than a "feel good" measure that solves nothing. WE, in panic and total foolishness, turned our backs on a real solution almost 40 years ago..nuclear energy. We have lost the technology we had to build sane reactors that gave us tremendous power at low cost and little danger, condisering the real scope of the problem we are facing. Sorry to be on a soap box...now get me started on today's parenting! That will run for pages! Love and peace to you, kind sir...Phil

Wickwire, drop me a line at my email address....I have no way to get ahold of you when you ask some things here, and often, I would like to clarify what I have said. I fully understand your not publishing your email address. Phil

I am especially concerned about recycling and not wasting precious resources. I am equally concerned about the weather changes, and how I can make a difference for future generations, like my grandchildren as well as all other around the world. I am going green in every way I can afford to.
