x^2 +8x + 16 = 81
x^2 +8x - 65 = 0
(x - 5) (x+13) = 0
x= 5; x = -13

2007-10-30 18:01:20 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 1 1

x^2 + 4x + 4x + 16 - 81 = 0
x^2 + 8x - 65 = 0
(x + 13) ( x - 5)

x = -13 and 5

2007-10-30 18:03:33 · answer #2 · answered by ferdie 2 · 1 0

(x+4)^2=81
Expanded form: (x+4)(x+4)=81
=x^2+8x+16=81
81-16=65
x^2+8x=65
x=5 (5X5=25+8X5=40; 25+45=65)
Not sure how I got the answer, I just do it in my head automatically.. _ . Sorry.

x+4=81^(1/2)
x=9-4
x=5

2007-10-30 18:01:41 · answer #5 · answered by Steve French 3 · 0 2

x + 4 = ± 9
x = 5 , x = - 13
OR
x² + 8x - 65 = 0
(x - 5)(x + 13) = 0
x = 5 , x = - 13

Take the square root, which yields plus or mins 9.
Then subtract 4 from 9, and then -9, and you get 5 and -13. Those are your two answers. :)

square root both sides
so
(x+4) = 9
x = 9-4 = 5

(x+4)^2 = 81

Find the square roots of each side, and solve for x.

x+4 = +9 or -9

I think you can do the rest. :)
