I feel like some people have this "holier-than-thou" attitude when it comes to hip hop that plays on the radio.

Yes, CK most people know that, but at the same time people act as if they never listen to radio hits.

Ace: Nothing wrong with being selective, it's just that some people are selective and decide to listen to some radio hits along with the underground and everything else.

There is nothing wrong with it. The radio usually keeps me amused for an hour until it goes on repeat...

It’s not about being “hollier than thou.” It’s about wanting more variety out of music and being able to choose what you want to listen to, instead of being forced to listen to what CLEARCHANNEL thinks you should hear. Clearchannel/Viacom owns most radio stations and they repeat ONLY the mainstream/TRL stuff over and over again continuously. They are very one-sided. They will not give equal or even a little bit of exposure to Underground artists or any of the more conscious artists and that’s not fair. And let’s face it, the mainstream stuff out right now is the greatest type of music. The radio is passé. A has been, a thing of the past. I thought everyone knew this!

No. But alot of them aren't as good. But some people just like different types of hip-hop I guess. Maybe thats why a lot of people listen 2 this stuff. I don't listen 2 the radio much.

I dont mind listening to the radio in regards to other genres of music, but I cant listen to the radio when hip hop comes on, they tend to play the worst of the genre rather than the best like other genres do.

The radio doesn't play the good stuff. ask any serious hip hop head. A lot of R&B is AIMED at women and girls. Guys who listen to the radio usually do it for the girls..

Hip Hop has changed a lot throughout the years. Back in the days hip hop was all about the lyrics, and now it's all about the cash and booty. Mainstream hip hop ten years ago was pretty good. You could hear naughty by nature, wu tang, house of pain and other similar groups on the radio. I love the good ol'times. While now it's different. All you hear in rap songs now is how many times they got shot (without ever seeing a gun in their lives about their money, their hoes, their platinum grills and even their white T-shirts (There was a song called White Tees and all they were talking about was their white t-shirts, goddamn). I don't want to hear about such things. I don' care that some crap rapper has 25 girls with tight asses around him. Rapping is supposed to be a lyrical expression of who you are and what you believe in. Rap is an expression of your soul and mind and not talking about your spinner rims. I don't watch music videos anymore, because I know that I'll never see the music I love on TV unless it's a hip hop documentary. Where's that rap that had meaning. There are so many rap songs that can make you think about yourself and your life. KRS One is a perfect example. They call him "the teacher" for a reason. But where's that kind of rap now? There are many artists who are still real but it's almost impossible to hear them on the radio. It looks like nowadays society prefers mindless lyrics that repeat 10 times in one song. I don't. I loose too many braincells by doing that. But that sells so that's what we've got. It's actually really strange to me. It's like choosing a piece of glass instead of a diamond. But everyone has its tastes. Another reason I think people listen to it is just because that's popular. It's like listening to something just because someone said it's cool, even if you don't like it so much, but after some time you start loving it. Damn. They just listen to what everyone listens to. Simple entertainment for the masses. You have to listen to all types of music to actually understand why do you like a certain genre and don't like another. The people that listen to mainstream hip hop haven't listened to old school, hardcore or underground hip hop and they hate it. You have to understand something in order to hate it. Like Himler (not Hitler). He spent years studying about the Jews. And that's why he really hated them(I don't want that offense someone). Another thing is that some of the best MCs are giving up their style now. Can you compare Cypress Hills' "What's your number" to "Hole in the head" for example. Or Eminem's joints before signing with Dre to what he sings now. That's just crazy. And I think I have to stop talking about this any more, because it's too long now. But I'll say YES, I think listening to mainstream hip hop, if you can call it such, is WRONG WRONG WRONG. It has no values and it's not worth waisting time.
Thank you.

back in the day you could listen to mainstream rap or hip hop and it wouoldnt bother me. you could actually hear decent people like Biggie, Nas, Common, Jay-Z (his older stuff was good in my opinion), Wu Tang, Outkast etc.

Now all you hear is crap, which is why i stick with my cds.

There was a time when you had to have some creativity when it came to hip hop/rap and it seems that alot of that is gone nowadays. Of course there is nothing wrong with listening to mainstream songs, I just personally see no creativity in the music anymore.

Mainstream rap is better than the underground stuff right now.

Matter of fact, outside of Wisemen, Madlib, and Talib Kweli, nothing released this year on the backpacker circuit has even been worth listening to.

No, but a lot of the local artists are just as good as the mainstream artists.
