Buy a bulb with less watts. 35-60 should do you pretty well.

Yes, bricks.
Put your lamp down on the ground and build a brick wall all the way round it - and then put a little roof on top.
Should do the trick.
Of course, you could always try putting a lower wattage bulb in your lamp - but I think bricks are better.

on the shade attach some constuction paper to inside with double stick tape?
maybe like stripes, or big dots, triangle not solid? so it can still get air thru.
maybe change shade?
also use a smaller wattage bulb/ if 40 now go done to 25??

What about putting a dimmer on the power cord, so long as the bulb is not fluorecent you can dim them
