"Massachusetts law states that employees must receive a 30-minute break after six hours of working. An employee must be free to leave the workplace during the break. An employee can voluntarily give up the meal break, but must be paid for all hours worked. Compensation for the 30-minute meal break must be paid if the employee has voluntarily agreed to waive his or her meal break by (1) working through his or her meal break, or (2) remaining on the premises during the meal break. The break period may be unpaid. Certain exemptions from this requirement can be found in General Laws c. 149, s. 100. "

Your employer is protecting themselves. Your co-workers may be resenting you for this also since you get to home early. You CAN skip your lunches but this has to be arranged between you and the employer providing it's feasable to the business. If it's a regular thing, you can arrange for a formal written agreement: it protects both of you. But in a few word, YES you HAVE TO sign off, log off (whatever) for 30 mins for every 4-6 hrs worked.

Yes, they can stop you from working any time they choose. They cannot force you to eat lunch, though. You can simply sit and stare at the walls if you wish.

It doesn't matter. The Fed govt handles this issue, and THEY decide whether or not you have to take a lunch break.
