f (x) = 3 x
f (x + 1) = 3 (x + 1)
f (x + 1) = 3 x + 3

f(x+1) if f(x)=3x
all you do is substitute in (x+1) for where x is in f(x) equation so you get
3(x+1) when you use foil you get 3x+3
