Jordan during the time he played he was class on the court and off the court. Not like these punks nowadays everyone is a thug. The only reason Wilt Chamberlain was so good was he was a tall *ss black man towering over a bunch of lil crackers.

I'm not going to make a case out of it because I honestly don't know the stats of other players from the past up to now. But I've seen them play and I can say that Michael Jordan is the most exciting player who ever played the game.

Bill Russell, if you're talking about basketball fundamentals. He easily had the best all-around game, back when the center was the focal point of his team, taking the University of San Francisco Dons (WHO??? Exactly!) to consecutive NCAA titles. M.J. wasn't the greatest, mainly because he played the easiest position on the floor. He was, though, without a doubt, the most exciting player in history. He actually made people forget about Dr. J and David Thompson and all the other guys who could jump out of the gym, and overshadowed the "Showtime" Lakers all by himself. God damn, he was fun to watch!

So you want someone who actually knows what theyre talking about, huh? Youre very demanding and so sure of yourself.

Short Answer:
In terms of accomplishment, Bill Russell is greater than Jordan.

In 13yrs as a Celtic, he lead his his team to 12 finals appearance and 11 championships to go along with 5 MVP's.

In 3 years, as a player for the USF Dons, he lead them to back to back NCAA championships during his junior and senior years with a 55 game winning streak and an undefeated season and All American honors.

To sum it up, in 16 years as a college player and a pro, Bill Russell was a champion for 13 years.

Long Answer:
Lets make one thing clear, it was Russell who carried his Hall of Fame teammates (and coach) and not the other way around.

The Celtics NEVER went to the NBA Finals before Russell even with Hall Of Famers like Coach Auerbach and players like Macauley, Cousy, Sharman, and Ramsey.

Back in the '62 season, Russell took himself out for 4 games and the Celtics lost 4 straight games even with Red Auerbach, Cousy, Sharman, the Joneses, Ramsey and other HoF's.

Back in '69, Russell took himself out for 5 games because of an injury and the Celtics lost 5 straight even with HoF's Sam Jones, Havlicek, Satch Sanders, and Bailey Howell.

The instances that i mentioned are the two worst losing streaks of the Russell-era Celtics. The latter is the worst losing streak of the Celtics since Red Auerbach took over the helm.

When Russell retired after the '69 season, the Celtics went down from 48 wins to 34 and they MISSED the Playoffs even with HoF's such as Havlicek, Sanders, Jo Jo White and Howell. A huge 14 game drop (when Jordan "retired" in '94 the Bulls went "down" from 57 wins to 55. A pitiful 2 game drop. And the Bulls played Game 7 with the Knicks on the Second Round).

And the modest 48 wins that the Celtics garnered during the '69 season is the lowest number of wins that the Celts have during the Russell -era and occured only because Russell spent a lot of time in the injured list and/or recovering.

The Celtic dynasty started with Bill Russell.

Remember Jordan won only 5 MVP's and 6 championship rings in the NBA.

Not that Russell wins only because he has talented teammates. He also lead a bunch of local boys, "a playground pick up team" from USF, a school with no gymnasium of its own, to back to back NCAA championships and a 55 game winning streak.

How come Jordan COULD NOT lead a school with a rich winning tradition like UNC, into the Final Four during his junior and senior years even though he have great teammates (like Sam Perkins and Brad Daugherty) and a great coach (Dean Smith)?

Jordan won an NCAA championship during his sophomore year as a Robert Horry-role player, riding on the coattails of the team's real star James Worthy. While Jordan's shot with 16 sec. left (not exactly a game winner) gave them the lead, it was Worthy's crucial steal in the dying seconds that sealed the win.

The fact that Bill Russell lead the 1956 US Olympic basketball team to a Gold medal while setting the highest average winning margin in Olympic basketball at 53.5, higher than the 1992 Dream team's 43(?) or the 1960 "superstar" Olympic team of Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, Walt Bellamy, Jerry Lucas etc., is just icing on the cake.

And before i forgot, Wilt Chamberlain, the guy who scored 100 and not Kareem, was never played one on one except by Russell and even he needs occasional help defense to contain the big fella. Opposing teams always assign double or triple teams to guard Wilt and they also employ all sort of punishing physical plays. . . . but that didnt stop Wilt.

Jabbar never scored 100 pts. in a game, that was Wilt Chamberland. MJ was undoubtedly the best to play the game. Six world titles, all of his league MVP's & scoring titles plus he made the all defense team several times.
