"worth more then their own" is nebulous and such comparisons are not as simple to make as looking at exchange rates.

For example, with $1.00 Australian you can buy about 90cents US. However, for a 15 year old worker in McDonalds in Australia will take 10 minutes to earn this $1. In US the same worker will take 15 minutes to earn the same amount. A Big Mac will cost $5.00 in Aus and $2.50 in the US. Petrol is $6.00 a Gal in Aus and $2.50 in the US.

Therefore you need to define "worth more".

Our exchange rate? As stated above. BUT I need a new laptop and it would cost $2500 here for what I want. Over there it will cost me about $1500. Even with the exchange rate as it is and factoring in transport etc, I am better off getting one from over there (total cost would be about $1750, a saving of $750.

Having a stronger currency is not always a good thing. If a currency goes down, then that makes people from foreign countries want to buy your products more, because their currency is now stronger and has more purchasing power. In fact, countries like China get into trouble for intentionally devaluing their currency, because they are an export manufacturing economy. Same thing goes for Japan, they generally like having a weaker yen as it is better for exporting. But no, its not a stupid question at all. In fact, it is quite a good one.
