ok, so tonight my local news told me that virtually everything in my home has too much lead in it. The paint on the walls, the toys in the toyboxes, the plates in the dish cabinet..etc. Last week they reported that worrying about stuff would cut 5-6 years off my life.
So, I cant decide whether I should worry about all the deadly things that surround me or if I should accept all the deadly things and not worry about it. Either way, they say it's killing me.
Didnt our grandparents live with lead in their homes too?
Both my grandmothers lived to be 90 years old. I have an aunt that is 95 (and still going strong), another aunt that just turned 90 last week, an uncle that is 89 (and still drives to church every Sunday), and another uncle that is around 88 and living it up in the deadly Florida sunrays...and those are all brothers and sisters. On the other side of the family I have 3 aunts that are all over 80, and an uncle that is 84.
Should I call them and ask which one they picked?

Lead is a common element found throughout the environment in many different sources. It poses a significant health risk if too much enters the body.
The risk is especially high for pregnant women and young children.
We have all accumulated some lead in our bodies over the course of our lives.
Lead may accumulate in almost all of our body tissues but only produces visible effects or symptoms when too much lead enters our bodies. The resulting disease is called lead poisoning.
Go ahead and grab that phone, I dare you !
BTW I've spent a lifetime eating the lead from my pencils ;)

Your relatives ate real food - they did not live on the modern American Diet (fast foods, junk foods, processed foods, etc.). They had a much higher nutritional intake of nutrients like Calcium that help prevent the absorption of lead and other heavy metals. Also, they were not exposed to the decaying lead paint as children (in today's old buildings, which were new buildings when they were children) - a time when the body is most vulnerable to lead exposures.

They were not exposed to the 100,000s of chemicals, heavy metals, and toxins that we are routinely exposed to in modern times FROM BEFORE BIRTH (in utero). Large numbers of small exposures (synergy) can be much more deadly than a few, single larger exposures.

Sunlight in Florida is GOOD FOR YOU. Today, from sun avoidance, there is a well-documented EPIDEMIC of Vitamin D deficiency in the U.S. Vit. D deficiency results in damage to the immune system, nervous system, musculoskeltal system, and weakening of bones (leading to Osteoporosis) and increased risk for many deadly diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis and many cancers.

Our lifestyles have changed drastically in the two generations since your grandparents were born. Medical researchers now predict that the current younger generation is so unhealthy from the Standard American Diet and modern lifestyles that they will be the first generation in history to not live longer than their parents.

Best wishes.

It's probably true, but like you said, it's probably not worth worrying too much about. Just make a mental note of it and try to buy glass dishes instead of plastic next time.

Of course, all the stuff we're importing from China (a country that can't enforce its own laws) doesn't help. The government can't check everything that gets imported. That's why they always find out about problems like this after it's too late.

All the crap we surround ourselves with will eventually kill us. There's no point worrying about it. And from your family history, it sounds like you have genetics on your side. These news stories just promote the culture of fear we have built for ourselves. Don't eat this, can't do that, stay away from everything. Terror alert orange. Keeps you on your toes.

Scare stories make for good viewership, whether or not the actual stuff in question is worth worrying about. For the most part, don't bother paying attention.
