I have a sofa with wood trim around it but my son recently scratched the wood so it looks a little chipped. Does anyone know what I can do to fix it and make it look good again?

If the Chip is very deep, you can go to you local hardware store and get some wood filler. Clean the chip and fill it with filler, don't worry about over filling the chip let it dry thoroughly and sand smooth and stain to match. You may have to stain all the wood to get a perfect match but not likely.

A lot depends on how deep the scratches are and how much wood surface is involved. If the wood has been stained a dark color and the scratch goes thru the stain to show a lighter wood you will have to re-stain or color to bring it back to dark. You should carefully sand the damaged area with 220 grit sandpaper prior to applying stain. Allow stain to dry. At this point you can varnish over the damage. This might call for several coats to bring the area up to the orig thickness but with some sanding you can feather it in. Depending on the match to original you would have the best result if you made the last coat cover all of the wood (good & damaged) to make it look even. You have to decide between gloss, semi gloss and satin.
I like to use a water based varnish because it dries in 30 minutes.
Finally use a 600 grit sandpaper to lightly sand the final repair.

If the scratch isn't too big get some Old English scratch cover and rub it on. It does a nice job because it fills the scratch making it much harder to notice. If the scratch is deep and gouged you can try some wood putty or wood patch then try matching the color with stain.
If you apply the patch make sure to try and get it as even as possible since you really don't want to have to sand it and risk marring the finish more.

Certainly apply paints wherever needed Paint is relatively inexpensive and can make a property look very good. Clean that backyard as well as you can, and replant dead grass areas. If your husband is handy, properly re-tile that bath area. Not expensive or difficult, unless he is a klutz. If your furnace still works well, do not replace it. TOO costly. You do not indicate why the 'electric' needs to be updated. If you have old fashioned fuses in the main box, you should update that. Any inspection will quickly indicate that it must be updated in order to meet current insurance requirements. In summation, paint is the least expensive to handle. Paint the exterior as needed, and get RID of any 'oddball colors' in the interior. Houses sell best with 'neutral colors' in all rooms. The lighter the paint you select, the larger will those rooms look. As well, be sure to 'de clutter' the house. If your rooms are stuffed with furniture, they will look small.

You can go to a good paint store and get a stain pencil (marker) that can match the stain on the wood. If the scratch is deep you can buy stained wood putty and repair it.

wood filler from local hardware and some sand paper and stain. The stain will be hard to match, but you'll be surprised with how good it will look.
