I did recently!

Was working in a gold mine on a shift arrangement - each shift has a limited number of positions and four shifts all up to cover day and night.

Our company is highly productive but was somehow (I don't know the economics behind it) acquired by a struggling new gold developer that needed a financial crutch to develop it's own new operations.

Unfortunately after the takeover, management decided to downsize the shifts by 3-5 people each. Rather than draw from a barrel or randomly fire people, they gave us a month to decide between ourselves if anyone would go voluntarily - or random selections would be made.

As I'm only 21, single, without any major debts, no kids and only renting, I ended up offering to leave. I figured in the end that a lot of the other fellows on my shift needed their jobs. Some of them had recently built houses, had kids, gotten married - one had even just bought a hobby farm. While some might say that they could've just sold it (which is true...) I didn't want to force them to be in that situation - and worse, for the ones with families, I didn't want them to be without work for their kids and partners - or having to leave the area (as many didn't want to go or their families didn't).

For me, it wasn't a problem - I was happy to shift away for a new job and found one without too many hassles - but it'd be a lot harder for the older guys and families to do the same - so I decided to give up my job because they needed it more. :-)

Hmmm...well the way I see it is if I gave up my job to someone who needed it then I would be the one who needed a job. So no I don't think I would.

No. But if I did, then wouldn't I need the job more because now I don't have a job? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Yeah and I will - to my mum. I'm doing her job for her while she's away for a few months but she won't have earned money for ages so I'm guessing she will be wanting it back as soon as she returns.
