I know that other people have asked this, but I want to hear some things you all do to keep your cats off and away from your Christmas tree! This is the first year we'll have cats and a tree so I'm hoping that everything will go well.. We're going to use ribbon to tie the ornaments to trees so they're a little less likely to fall, but other than that, we don't know waht to do! Thanks for the ideas!

Ha ha! Have you seen Christmas Vacation? Whatever you do, don't let your cat pull off the Christmas lights or you'll have "fried pussycat"!

Keep a camera handy. There is always a good picture waiting to happen with cats and Christmas trees.

I don't remember it ever being a problem. Very seldom did anything break. And a cat stuck in the branches is funny.
Make sure the tree is well supported.

A few happenings and the cat will learn its not really fun. And the water squirt is a good idea. Keeps the tree happy with moisture too.

Petland has a spray that you can buy that apparently smells nasty to cats. Just spray it on your tree (only bad part is it must be done every other day) and the cat stays away. I tried to help my aunt with this problem last year, spraying the cat with water really doesn't work. I probably wouldn't put any special ornaments near the bottom of the tree though, just to be safe. Good luck!!!

With the exception of one who we couldn't ever stop from chewing on the lights until he got shocked (and that taught him his lesson) this has never been an issue. I've had several cats since then and no problems whatsoever. One suggestion I heard though was to use non-breakable ornaments on the bottom branches and the nicer ones near the top.

Its almost impossible to keep them out of it. For several years, we ended up tying very strong fishing line to the tree and then to a curtain rod that was fastened very well into the wall to help keep the tree upright. As the cats got older, the fun of attacking the tree waned and they just ended up sleeping under it.

we actually purchased a Norwegian spruce... the needles are stiffer so they actually poke...we had several cats that loved to climb trees...never did that one. They are a beautiful frosted green color w/ a red bark. Perfect Christmas tree :) good luck

Just spray the cat with water whenever they go near it thats what I do. And we hide the presents until christmas, because our cat likes to eat the ribbon.
