High contrast coloration with a light anterior surface and dark dorsal can be for camouflage. Seen from below the pale underside will merge with the air surface in appearance while seen from above the dark back merges with a sandy bottom. This works well in reefs or other shallow waters.http://fins.actwin.com/species/index.php?t=9&i=616
However most distinct coloration is for mate selection. This is especially true for species with markings that show in the UV 300nm wavelengths or with very hard edged markings. Camouflage is best with broken markings in colors to match the surrounding material.

Striped juveniles in large schools can hide single members among their numbers with the stripes merging the individual fish into the school. Predators will be unable to focus on an individual so will lunge at random. This reduces the chances of any one fish being at risk.
