From 1892 to 1954, Ellis Island served as an immigrant depot. Newly-arrived immigrants (up to 12 million at this point) were processed here before they entered America and became American citizens. Before 1894, I am not sure what occurred there. Try an internet search, or your local public library.

Federal government opened Ellis island for immigration, fire destroyed the building and it reopened again within this time frame.

I'm not sure if this was the time frame, but I saw it on the Pbs channel. I think that's when it was turned over to be a government camp for people.
