I'm a senior in Puerto Rico and I really want to go to one of the Ivies, but I'm not sure if I can. I got a 1600 on the SAT (Reading-560, Math-510, Writing-610). I have one of the highest scores in my grade but I know it's nothing compared to kids in the states. My GPA is 3.9, I'm a member of the National Honor Society, and the editor of the yearbook. I want to be a zoologist/documentarist and I do lots of volunteer work (esp. at the animal shelter). I was also an intern for the Rainforest Alliance in New York last year and I received a scholarship to attend a Biological Conservation course at Columbia University last summer. I also have my own jewelry business that I am very serious about (I make everything myself). I'm going to take the Math l, Spanish, and Biology Subject Tests on Saturday but I don't think I'll do well. Will my extracurriculars help make up for my low scores? Can I still get into an Ivy, and if not can you recommend a good school to apply to? Thanks!

Your grades are there -- but about 75% of those who get accepted at Ivy League universities have SAT scores that are 600 points higher than yours.

You will get into some good schools, but I think your chances of Ivy League caliber schools are very low.

Your extracurriculars are very good, but you have to keep in mind that the average Ivy SAT score is in the high 2000s and above. Obviously, this means there are people who do worse and get in, but when you're far toward the low end of the bell curve and the competition is fierce, it pays to have some good backups in mind. You might want to take a look at the FairTest list of schools for places that will care more about your accomplishments than your scores, or do a search based on your major interests and check the stats for schools that are strong in both, which is probably not going to be a long list.

I would try top level Canadain Schools 1) they don't care about the SAT 2) Canadian Ivies(UBC UofT and Queen's) are all near a Ivy league level 3) Cost (is a little less then at US Ivy league) 4) at a Canada school you have a very good shot at a major Entrance Scholarship. I would say UBC as Vancouver is a great city a UBC is one of the greatest school in the world. of couse if you really would like a America Ivy League go for it and maybe put into a Canadain school or two for ensurane

Well, I'd guess you have a decent chance of getting in. One thing you have going for you is that you're Puerto Rican--they have diversity initiatives, and a female hispanic who wants to do a science curriculum might be extra attractive.

If you don't get into an Ivy, I'd consider starting at a community college somewhere and then transferring to any state university that offers the program you want. The quality will be equivalent and you'll save money.

Your SAT scores will exclude you. But you can always take the SAT again. I wouldn't even submit scores under 2100 to a highly selective school. 2200 is average for Harvard.

Eh, doesn't look like it, but don't give up. Apply to some smaller universities that have good zoology programs. They would accept you readily and probably offer a good scholarship package.

Hey ash! I really think you have a high chance to get in. If you are hard working, dedicate, and a perseverant student( characteristics you actually show) it is easy to get in where ever you want to go. It does not matter your scores that much if you have high expectations and interest in what u r going to study. GOOD LUCK! LA ESPERANZA ES LO ULTIMO Q SE PIERDE!
