You need to condition them separately for at least 2 weeks on havy protein food
here is an article which explains everything in detail

Once your pair has been conditioned and your female is beginning to look round with eggs you can set up a spawning tank. You tank needs to be a minimum of 5 gallons, although 10 g works better, and filled 1/2 way with conditioned water. Place a submersible heater and sponge filter in the tank, and adjust the temperature on the heater until it stabilizes at 80 F. Tape 1/2 a Styrofoam cup cut lengthwise to the corner of the tank farthest away from the filter (do not turn it on yet, only after you remove the male will you need to use it). Introduce your male to the tank first and give him a couple of hours to swim around and explore. Next place the glass hurricane (or if you can not find one any cylindrical glass structure will work) close to where you want your male to build his bubblenest and place your female in the hurricane. If they are ready to mate the male will begin flaring and displaying to the female and she will get light vertical bars (if she is a dark bodied female) and assume a head down swimming position. Leave the pair like this overnight, by morning your male should have a good head start on his bubblenest. When you have time to supervise them release the female from the hurricane and observe them closely for any overt signs of aggression (bettas are a little rough when mating so some aggression is normal). As long as your pair is getting along well you can leave them together until they spawn, which may take a few days, especially for inexperienced fish. Remember raising bettas is a lot of work, make sure you have the proper food for the fry set up before you spawn them as most live cultures take at least two weeks to get going. Good luck.
