The speedometer is cable driven. Is there a point at which the cable is too far in the speedometer or can I tighten the nut holding the two together all the way?

There is no point where the cable will be too far into the speedo. Tighten the nut fully. If you don't, it can (probably will) vibrate loose. When that happens, the cable falls out and your speedo suddenly reads zero. As far as calibration goes, it should already be set to read correctly with the stock diameter front wheel.

No, it comes from the factory calibrated. What those nuts do is makes sure that the cable is in the speedo completely because when it isn't, it dosent work. Don't tighten the cable too much though, because if you do, you'll wear it out too quickly. There is no specific point. just don't adjust it and see how it works. If you change the gearing on the bike, or change wheel size which you probably didn't do or won't do because it is a beeotch to do on a shaft drive, you do need to go to the speedo shop.

it should be already calibrated from the factory, but if you have doubts, contact the local police depatment and have them help you.
tell them you need to see if your speedometer is funtioning properly, and ask them to set up a speed trap for you....
have them radar you while you ride down a street at a preset speed.
