I do not know the answer, but I would not say they would be sterile. The box is a weak container, not even waterproof. I would say baterica would be able to get on the cans.
For washing, it doesn't hurt to wash. I normally just wipe the top with a napkin; especially when I'm in China.

NO they are not sterile. Soda is not sterilized in the can. Technically yes you should ALWAYS wash the can before you OPEN it as there are tons of germs, dirt and who knows what on the top of the can. Not all warehouses are bug/rodent proof so that is why you wash the top before you even open it.

It's probably sanitized when it leaves the factory floor, but then it's most likely bombarded by who know's what. They do store the soda in a warehouse for weeks at a time. They you have people delivering them and people touching them at the supermarkets.
Just give it a rinse or a good wiping before you open it. I'd rather take a minute and clean than being sick for the few days.

They are so filthy that if you'd drink out of one without at least wiping it off, it'd be about the same as taking a lick of the floor of a grocery store.
I don't remember how many years ago, but Oprah did a segment showing microscopic evidence of disgustingly filthy things the general public assumes are clean.

in all danger the manufacturers have been given deeply & pretty requests from the faster 'different halves' to maintain the POP UP or Loud Phhssss sound equipment so as that the previous due-nighttime-drinker husbands face problem! No thank you to eliminate it. in basic terms you could manage a seminar between manufacturers+Husbands+different halves and talk the problem to withdraw sound equipment :-)

Not sterile. Just run it under water and wipe. Or scrub with a tissue paper. They sit in a warehouse and collect dust and probably stuff you don't want to know.

by restaurant and food industry standards one could take a sanitized cloth or a towel dipped in light bleach water and the tops should be washed first prior to opening.

They are certainly not sterile, but they are considered safe enough that they don't need to be washed. I don't wash any of mine.

Well they're not sterile and if you're that germophobic I would wash it but I don't bother, not that I have cans often
