seems as if in some schools a lot of focus is pushed upon athletics and as a result, the academics take a backseat.

Look at Duke as a counter-example. Great athletics, but no one can fault their academics. It appears that if a school has its priorities straight, it can be done. Unfortunately, many schools do not.

At Rice U. it's quite the opposite we may not be great in sports (other than baseball and tennis), but we do well academically. I think you get all of the smart people or all of the athletic ones... I think it's fine where we are, I dont know if I could stand wondering how many people there got in for their brawn rather than their brain... At least in most universities you can tell (with rare exceptions).
